Internate sind national wie international in historischen und aktuellen Bildern ihrer Lebensform und der Praktiken der Kommunikation stark präsent, auch in Behauptungen über ihre Bedeutung zwischen der Beförderung jugendlichen Glücks und gesellschaftlicher Karrieren, als Ort der Identitätsbildung oder des systemisch erzeugten Missbrauchs. Jenseits der medialen Präsenz fehlt allerdings eine synchron wie diachron angemessene Geschichte dieser Institution. Der Beitrag versucht, die Historiographie des Internats im Blick auf seine Genese und Tradition als Material einer Gesamtperspektive zu lesen und diese spezifische pädagogische Welt als Bildungswelt zu verstehen.
Nationally and internationally, the historical and contemporary images of boarding schools, their way of life and practices of communication are highly visible. This includes claims about their significance with regard to the ways in which they promote their pupils' happiness and social careers, as places of identity formation, or places of systemically generated abuse. Beyond the media presence, however, a synchronously and diachronically appropriate history of this institution is missing. This article attempts to read the historiography of the boarding school in terms of its genesis and tradition as a material of an overall perspective and to understand this specific educational world as a world of 'Bildung'.
