Neu Johannes Calvin 1509-2009
Zeitschriftenartikel

The celebration of the 500th anniversary of John Calvin brings to the question how his theology could become so widespread and influential. The publication and translation of his works, the contacts with many influential Europeans and the success of his academy are only one side of the explanation. A deeper reason is the attractiveness of Calvin's theology which combined much of what these before him had said and written and which also was easy to adapt to various ecclesiastical and political circumstances. His combining of justification and sanctification, his view on the relation between church and state, his ecclesiology and his impulses to natural sciences are some of the main ingredients of this theology.
