Friedrich Siegmund-Schultze must be called one of the pioneers of the peace movement in the German Protestantism of the 20th century. This article focuses on Siegmund-Schultzes engagement with the question of conscientious objection of military service in the first decade of the Federal-Republic of Germany. The study portraits the organisations, which Siegmund-Schultze founded to promote the protection of conscientious objectors, and illustrates the respective positions in this question, both institutional and personal. Eventually the study interprets these positions from a perspective of socio-scientific individualisation following the German sociologist Ulrich Beck. It argues, that Siegmund-Schultzes engagement for conscientious objectors had effects of individual liberation and disenchantment of norms and institutions referring to state and society but also caused a new control and normative reintegration of young conscripts by calling the objection of military service the only possible Christian decision.
