After an orientation on the term and on the medical and legal dimensions of Voluntary Stopping of Eating and Drinking (VSED), the authors give an ethical assessment of the phenomenon. On the basis of action-theoretical and phenomenological criteria, they distinguish VSED from a suicidal action and argue for VSED as an act of relinquishing, with which the inevitable dying process is accelerated. The metaphor of 'life satisfaction', which, according to biblical usage, describes both retrospective contentment and weared satiety, can provide orientation in the sense of a metaphorical ethic in a field of ethical conflict that can hardly be solved logically.
