A possible approach to Luther's concept of Law and Commandment is an exploration of his interpretation of the Decalogue within the catechisms. After a short introduction to Luther's knowledge of the Old Testament and the role of the Decalogue within the catechisms, I give an outline of Luther's concept of Scripture regarding the relationship of Law and Gospel. Based on this outline, Luther's philological and theological considerations are exemplified an four commandments - Sabbath observance, prohibition of theft, prohibition of coveting, and finally the First Commandment- and assessed from an Old Testament perspective.
