Reformation research has debated a lot about Luther's attitude toward Judaism. For a better understanding, specific advice he gave on Jewish policy must be distinguished from his over-all theological convictions. The most radical advice is found in the late Anti-Jewish writings of the forties, while Luther seems to take a more tolerant stance in the 1523 writing "That Jesus Christ Was Born a Jew". However, it shares the theological basis of Luther's early and late writings though, which shows criticism of Judaism as allegedly legalistic and unable to understand Scripture properly because of not reading it in the light of Christ. The arguments are closely entangled with the doctrine of justification, so that Protestant theology must face the task of rethinking its core conviction.
