The human embryonic stern cell research has elicited controversial ethical debates. Antagonism between the different views in German Protestant Ethics raises the question about the possibility of authoritative and obligatory moral decisions. The article examines this issue in two steps. (1) Considering hermeneutical discussions in literary studies and jurisprudence, it investigates the relevance of the Bible for making moral judgements. The conclusion is that the Bible alone is not a sufficient source for binding moral decisions on today's regenerative medicine. (2) With reference to the doctrine of justification, the article asserts that the anthropological concept of human Non-Perfectibility can serve as a basic and indispensable principle in Protestant Ethics, and it furthermore asserts the necessity to take this principle into account in moral controversies.
