The paper identifies first (part 1) a number of reasons why mission as it was understood and practiced in the 19th and the first half of the 20th century can no longer be continued, and a new theology of mission is called for. Part 2 presents some new approaches to a theology of mission which try to address the problems of contemporary mission theology in different ways (Beyerhaus, Sundermeier, Werner, Brandt, Ahrens, Bosch, Bevans and Schroeder, Kirk). The final part 3 mentions five aspects which may be of some relevance for further discussion on mission theology and it suggests with minor modifications Sundermeier's definition as a viable basis for mission.
