The essay asks why and how the church should engage in the public discourse about fundamental ethical and political questions. Employing examples such as creation, forgiveness and freedom, it demonstrates how religious convictions can offer resources for ethical orientation. Finally it develops six guidelines for responsible public statements of the church within the pluralistic society of this day and age.
