The collapse of Communism opened up a very tense period in the relationship between the Orthodox churches and die (WCC). The crisis was visible in the seventh plenary assembly held at Canberra in 1991. Schism almost happened in the eighth in 1998 in Harare. The major conflicts revolved around cultural pluralism, religious syncretism, intercommunion, the ordination of women, die 'inclusive language', homosexuality, proselytism, variable geometry, in representation, ecumenical worship, and ecclesiolog7-. The paper of the mixed commission accepted by die central committee in 2002, was interpreted partly-as a fearfuI, and partly as an honest, open, and clean document. Running parallel the Catholic-Orthodox relationship got into great difficulties, given the strengthened position of die uniate churches in the former eastern block and proselytism. This reached its historical nadir with the elevation in 2002 of the four apostolic administrations in Russia to dioceses.
