Ecumenical hermeneutics of die sacraments explore their ecclesial and theological context, beyond its doctrine in a limited sense. With the example of baptism and on the background of its understanding in middle ages (Thomas Aquinas) and Reformation rimes (Martin Luther) it is shown, first, that salvation has a different meaning in both traditions, but both develop the doctrine in a creative manner beyond the New Testament witness; and second, that the ecclesiological dimension of baptism leads to different conclusions concerning the mandate of all baptized in relation to the ordained ministry. But the practice (for example: die emergency baptism by non ordained people) shows that the differences can become relativized.
