The study on hand analyzes the socioethical guiding principle underlying the statutory pension insurance since its redefintion in 1957. It tracks the changes of the 1990s and makes clear that the onset of the 2000s effectively put an end to the guiding principle of the inter-generational contract. Hence a public discourse about the future of the pension policy is due. Christian churches as well as Christianly motivated social ethics may make important contributions. Decisions are needed and urgent: Bither the inter-generational contract will be permanently dismissed or alternatively the guiding principle will be revised, however this requires a great effort from society as a whole.
