"Bildung" - this concept is hard to translate to other languages. It aims at a discerning participation in the entire praxis of a society. Into this praxis all cultural practices of very different and incompatible modes to encounter and understand the world need to be merged. An abilty to distinguish between these modes is required which cannot be provided by naturalistic scientific concepts. This is not only significant for the Humanities or Religion but also for teaching and learning in the sciences.
