For a long time, poimenics has been adopting insights from theory and practice of psychology. However, concepts of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) have been neglected so far. An analysis of Albert Ellis's, Aaron T. Beck's, and Hartich H. Stavemann's theories demonstrates that "freedom" is a central topic of the interdisciplinary dialogue. The methods of both theology and science-based cognitive behavioral therapy meet under the keyword "Wirksamkeit" (efficacy/effectiveness). A comparison with systemic pastoral care proves the same methods to be already in use there. Altogether; "psychologically informed pastoral care" proves as pioneering approach: Pastoral care is not identical with psychotherapy, but it deals with the most relevant approaches of psychotherapeutical research and reflects its own methods against this background.
