Zeitschriftenartikel

This essay is reflecting on the present structural reform of the Catholic Church within the long run of episodes of change in the 19th and 20th centuries. A first chapter focuses on the ultramontanist movement. The second part describes the wave of reform that developed within the German Catholic Church after 1945, reached its climax during the time of the Second Vatican Council and continues to have an impact until today. In a third step, the outcome is situated within the European context. Finally a hypothetical perspective on the risks of the present modernization processes is given.
