The descriptive and normative interpretation of a well-lived life and how this is perceived and sought lies at the heart of religious education's reflection on its theory. In this article, the discipline's potential hermeneutic force and its capacity to criticize utopian ideals are discussed under the guiding principle that religious education is life science. An approach based on theology and biblical wisdom reveals that the future achievement of good lives and the associated freedoms to educate, practise faith and live accordingly are under real threat. The author examines relevant milestones in religious education's recent history to show how theory can be formulated to interpret the reality of life and render a wise exploration of living a good life.
