From interviews with ten couples about their recent church wedding the article shows how the wedding rite is perceived as bringing about a change of status as well as confirming a change that has already occurred. V. Turner's ritual theory and dramaturgical theories help to understand the connections between both types of perceptions. Bride and groom today take on the role of co-stage directors.
