An EU initiative for social entrepreneurship wants to promote the key role that social enterprise plays as an agent of social economy and social innovation. This raises the question about the extent to which the self-understanding of diaconal undertakings corresponds to this definition, and what relevance the initiatives of the EU have for diaconal work in individual countries and in Europe as a whole. The primary emphasis of the present contribution is on the »added value« of diaconal undertakings over against other applicants in the area of social economy, and inquires after theological impulses for innovation potential in diaconal undertakings. In addition, socio-political trends, chances and dangers are discussed from the viewpoint of social ethics.
