This contribution scrutinizes whether theological knowledge can be seen as an example of the new type of transdisciplinary knowledge that has been developed recently. Theological knowledge integrates insights and types of knowledge from different academic subjects and combines them in order to solve a problem beyond university: the maintenance, stabilization, and promotion of the communication of religious experience relating to Jesus Christ. The essay shows that this is the case not only since Schleiermacher's influential thesis of the unity of theology, but that it can be traced back to the reformatory impulse of the theology of the 16th century reformers.
