Theologie als Wissenschaft

Following up Rudolf Bultmanns' criticism of 19th century's liberal theology, this essay reflects on the position of the discipline of theology within the "House of Sciences", the sciences' construction of reality being characterised by secularism. The real challenge for theology is not caused by an external, secularistic criticism but rather by the intensive tensions between a secularistic construction of reality and a meaningful way of talking of God. In view of the indifference of modern science to the individual case, the question of the hermeneutic implications of a Christian theology arises, whose reflections on God are concentrated on the extraordinary accidental event of the coming of Jesus Christ. Further questions treated concern the relationship between the absolute (a concept without there is no serious religion) and the relativity of the real and the possibility to address the question of truth (to which every religion is related) within a context characterised by the limitation to "realities" and differing views. Theology will be science then by calling attention to the profoundness of that kind of talking of God which is beyond its reach.
