It exists a growing interest in the protection of animals in church and theology corresponding with a social and political attention towards this issue. Despite a well elaborated legal framework in Germany there are a lot of evils in animal husbandry, veterinary treatment and slaughtering. In this paper the different philosophical concepts of animal protection and animal rights are critically discussed and the latest theological concepts are presented. The paper comes to the conclusion that for Christian theology an anthropocentric perspective in combination with pathocentric elements is necessary in order to estab lish a social concept to improve the protection of animals by combining different interests given in a pluralistic society. Here the contribution of theology and the churches as intermediate institutions is not to be neglected.
