The insight that God always is greater (deus semper major) indicates the limitations of all human attempts to understand God. The nature of God's greatness, as well as its relation to man and to the world as a whole is made clear in biblical language, exemplified in 1 John 3:20. It is not only that God's greatness transcends the extremes of maximum and minimum, but also that God unifies both of these within itself (coincidentia oppositorum) and communicates himself in human words. God's omnipotence is proven in His promise, inasmuch as this is again »greater« than the accusations present in the hearts of man. This contemplation of the comparative "greater than" seeks on the whole to be understood as a contribution to a theological grammar, which owes its sources and its norms to biblical language.
