Heidegger and Bultmann were lifelong friends. However, their close cooperation in the mid-1920s in Marburg came to an end when Heidegger returned to Freiburg in 1928. One of the central issues between the two thinkers was the relationship between theology and philosophy. Both agreed that the two disciplines must not be mixed up or confused. But Heidegger never managed to find a convincing way of describing their relationship in positive terms, and he rejected the solution outlined in his "Phenomenology and Theology" soon after it was written. The article analyzes the debate between the two friends and shows why Heidegger failed to arrive at a positive solution to the problem.
