This article reviews recent German Protestant ecumenical discussions, in particular a new study paper of the German Lutheran churches (VELKD) and several new writings by Ingolf U. Dalferth. The article discusses different variants of doctrinal plurality acceptable for Protestant theology: 1.a "weak" plurality is critical of visible unity but requires common understanding, 2.a "strong" plurality qualifies the very possibility of reaching a common understanding concerning religious doctrines, 3.a consistent "perspectivism" is also critical of the established ecumenical goals of unity. The author argues that a "perspectivist" theory of ecumenism, put forward in different ways by both VELKD and Dalferth, may lead in such a particularist understanding of theology which is hardly compatible with other churches and their understanding of ecumenism.
