In Protestant Ethics, the Old Testament is frequently seen as a collection of moral rules of which the main points are summarised in the Decalogue (1.). By way of contrast, this contribution would like to call attention to the various challenges concerning ethical reflections in the Old Testament. Examples for that are (2.) the problem of the knowledge of good and evil, (3.) the problem of implementing what is perceived as good in the conduct of life, (4.) the meaning of feelings and intuition for morals, (5.) the problem of guiltiness (or sin) and how it is processed, (6.) the question of justice in the course of the world, (7.) the ratio of morals and law, (8.) morals and culture, as well as (9.) morals and religion. (10.) Protestant Ethics (assisted by Old Testament Study with its historical-critical approach) should therefore rather not adopt the Old Testament as a "teaching book in morals", but as a "learning book in ethics".
