Altruism and love of neighbor are different, but not irreconcilable concepts. Biblical ethics confirms the possibility of love of God, neighbor and self being one in accordance with another. Dialogue with philosophical, educational and psychological concepts of altruism will help to reflect the awareness of the problems connected with the ethical potential of the commandment of love rooted so deeply in the Bible. These concepts span between the poles of identity and sociability, authority and freedom, religion and ethos. Its core is the hermeneutical ability to communicate between a reflected theocentrism and humanitarianism. Thus one can realize the biblical approach not to develop a peculiar moral but to enforce morality itself and to provide secular ethical approaches of liberal cultures with a religious dialogue partner setting its limits and showing its pathways.
