This essay studies the GDR and the New Apostolic Church as an example of the relation between state and church. Selected source materials suggest some paradigmatic areas of conflict between state and church, such as the question of military service, Jugendweihe (consecration of the youth), and the construction of churches as well as secret surveillance of the New Apostolic Church by the Ministry of State Security. The contribution concludes with a classification of the New Apostolic Church within the governmental politics of differentiation.
