Zur Inkulturationsdebatte in Brasilien
Zeitschriftenartikel

The term "inculturation" had its origin in recent Roman Catholic mission-theology, and has since become a widely accepted concept in Christian theology, broadly spoken. The increasing relevance of "inculturation" is attested by its appearance in the four major German theological encyclopedias (EKL3, LThK3, RGG4 and TRE) (1.). In the debate over inculturation in Brazil the subject is given additional prominence through the positions taken - despite persistent dixerences - by the theologians Leonardo Box, Paulo Suess and Jose Comblin. These disputants contend vigorously for an autonomous Latin American (as opposed to Roman) Christianity and for the nurturing of a liberating culture. (II.) The contribution concludes with a plea for the recognition of the inculturation debate as a challenge to Protestant theology to critically examine the relegation of religions to the status of cultures, and to take into account the empirical conclusions of the scientific study of religion, which indicate a possible failure in the organisation of inculturation programs. This in turn, could contribute to the formulation of a "Theology of Failure" (III.).
