In den Jahren von 1955 bis 1958 fand in der DDR eine letzte, auch die Öffentlichkeit einbeziehende pädagogische und schulstrukturelle Diskussion statt, deren Ausgang präformierend war für die Entwicklung in den folgenden drei Jahrzehnten und den schließlichen Zusammenbruch des politischen Systems einschließlich der Schule. Untersucht werden Bedingungen, Verlauf und Resultat dieser Diskussion vornehmlich anhand bislang unerschlossener Archivalien, die insbesondere Auskunft geben über interne politische Spannungen, bildungspolitische Erwägungen und konträres Wissenschaftsverständnis im Kreis der maßgeblichen Erziehungswissenschaftler und Schulfunktionäre.
From 1955 to 1958, a final pedagogical and school-structural discussion integrating the public took place in the GDR, the results of which predetermined the development of the next three decades and the ultimate failure of the political system, including its school system. The author examines the conditions, the course, and the results of this discussion, mainly on the basis of unpublished documents as yet unexplored that contain above all information on internal political tensions, educational-political considerations, and conflicting scientific concepts in the circle of the leading educational scientists and school functionaries.
