Recognition is an ambiguous category. On the one hand, recognition as a term and desirable attitude towards the world is highly valued; on the other hand recognition seems to be(come) increasingly problematic, as the individual is often actively searching to acquire it. The thesis of this contribution is that, in the history of modern society, the contexts and modes of recognition differ, increase, and obliterate, finally leading to excessive expectations for the individual. In a first step the primary constellation of the quest for recognition is discussed in its sociological context and the terms "role", "person", "individual" and "recognition" are defined. Then the roots of the problem of recognition as a result from social diversification into a functionally differentiated society are described) the problem of parasitic relations of recognition is analysed and the possible role of religion in this recognition is discussed.
