The article traces the path of German Protestantism from its initial scepticism about democracy to its current resolute advocacy of the democratic constitutional state. It underlines the importance of the appropriation of democratic principles by religious communities under their own ideological premises. Amongst others it examines the interventions of church representatives during the constitutional process, the official affirmation of the constitutional order by the democracy memorandum of the EKD in 1985 and the democratic compatibility of the church's goals of influence pursued in the Berlin Republic. Also thanks to the commitment of lay protestants, old theological antagonisms have worn off, but the tension between representative and participatory conceptions of democracy has remairred topical.
