Science-based medicine as well as contemporary theology both lack a doctrine of the ill person. In dialogue with die medical anthropology of Viktor von Weizsäcker theology could discover the fact that human dependence on the body is indeed a gift. It is important for medicine to discern what the body wants to say in and through a disease. However, in contrast to the meaningfulness of disease discovered by von Weizsäcker, theology also has to stress that illess can lack any meaning. Illness can not only reveal a salutory truth about our lives, but can also cause a sorrow of the soul which leads to death.
