This introductory article discusses various meanings of "fundamentalism" by looking at its evangelical roots in American Protestantism in the late 19th century. The voluminous fundamentalism project by Martin E. Marty and R. S. Appleby provides an instructive collection of characteristics of fundamentalist groups. This creates various theological challenges of which special attention is given to the inerrancy of scripture. In conclusion a prospect in term of theory of education is proposed.
