The essay presents first of all fundamental concepts popular in the reform of educational sciences (like competence, standards of education, central curricula) and their relations. Subsequently the standards of religious education are discussed; several models of competence recommended in the context of religious education (Ulrich Hemel; Comenius-Institute of the German Protestant Churches, Münster) are focused. On this background the relation of religious competence and Christian faith is sketched. Both should be differentiated, but not be regarded as antithetical.
