Coming from a broad understanding of music as formed sound, this article sketches the differentiation of musics since the Renaissance through the keywords popular music and pop music. It places particular emphasis on the technological revolutions of the last 200 years. (New) sacred music is understood primarily as a phenomenon of reception and usage. Using examples from the avantgarde, jazz, new sacred song, pop songs as well as interreligious music the broad spectrum of new sacred music is presented. Finally, the article advocates "open-earedness" as a religious educational approach.
