The perception that economical calculations get increasingly dominant in the social field is commonly articulated with the tag of "economization". In this paper, an ethical framework is developed to discuss phenomena of economisation of the social. Starting from the concept of rationalisation in Max Weber's sense, economisation can be understood as part of a broader dynamics of rationalisation in the social field. It is initiated by the very aim to help but then generates a momentum that threatens to cannibalise the inital purpose. This is deployed on different levels, regarding the processes of helping, social enterprises, and society, respectively. Finally, the contribution of the churches and their charity organisations to cope with economisation processes is discussed.
