The article uncovers the different forms of dogmatics in Martin Luther's "Sermon on Preparing to Die" (1519), a sermon by Friedrich Schleiermacher at his own son's funeral (1829), and Eberhard Jüngel's book "Death" (1971). Beyond their important insights, dogmatics today has to change its methodological approach by incorporating the complexity of phenomena of life. At the same time it has to realize the constructionist character of all cognition and expression. Hence, dogmatic theology should aim at what the author calls a hermeneutical approach to the performative polyvalence of biblical texts and dogmatic traditions.
