Processes of digitization are altering traditional structures of thinkng, communicating, and power. At the same time, the way we understand ourselves as human beings shifts. Two fields of digital technology are taken as examples of questions that are posed today, namely "big data" and autonomous weapons. By using a theoretical modelthat puts the ethics of technology within the context of society, two issues are identified to be of central importance to the field. These are inequality and freedom. Although these issues find an answer with respect to both fields of inquiry, they are only a starting point for the pragmatic work of dealing with the details in the process of lawmaking and offering the supposed better alternative.
