In all the current German motion pictures about pilgrimage, the topic of death plays a prominent role. Thus, traditional aspects of a theology of pilgrimage like finiteness, failure, being held, and renewal are taken up. The movies tell stories on how the confrontation with death may lead to let go and get involved with others and to find oneself again through substitutional commitment.
